The Ultimate Risk
Fifteen men and women have paid the ultimate price for their devotion to our space program.
Although there were some close calls in Projects Mercury and Gemini, it was not until the Apollo 1 fire on the launch pad in 1967 that America would mourn the loss of an entire crew. This tragic event underscored the intense dangers associated with space travel and the incredible courage required to become an astronaut. Disaster would strike again in 1986, as the nation would be reminded of these risks, suffering the loss of the shuttle Challenger and its crew.
In this program we pay tribute to these brave man and women and honor their commitment to the dream.
